About
Why this site exists
Every painting website in Auckland shows a price per square metre. None of them says where the number came from, because there is no official one to come from. This site is the attempt to do the honest version of that page: show the published data where it exists, name the gap where it does not, and label judgement as judgement.
The commercial relationship, plainly
How this site makes money
Stated up front, because a reader who discovers it later is right to discount everything above it.
Paintwork Auckland is an information resource. Its commercial purpose is to introduce qualified painting work to an Auckland trade partner, and it may benefit from that introduction.
That partner is not yet confirmed. There is no arrangement in place as this is published, so the site is not currently earning anything, and it does not pretend that a business stands behind it. Concretely, that means you will not find on any page: a phone number, an address, a workmanship guarantee, a licence or Licensed Building Practitioner number, a trade-association membership, insurance cover, years in business, a crew size, a job count, or a star rating. Not because those things are unimportant — because this site cannot yet back any of them up, and the build refuses to publish them.
When a partner is confirmed, they will be named, and their real credentials will appear with them. Until then the only thing on offer is a brief that gets read and answered honestly.
What the money cannot buy
A figure. No range on this site is set to make a quote look reasonable, and where the data does not support a number, the page says so instead of guessing. That rule is enforced by the build, not by good intentions: the component that renders a statistic will not render one without a source and a date, and the gate that runs before deployment fails the build if an operator claim appears while the partner is unconfirmed.
Who publishes it
Amit Sharma
Paintwork Auckland is published by Amit Sharma, who builds and maintains a set of New Zealand property and data sites — among them PropertyScope, which sets out zoning suburb by suburb, and SuburbIQ, which tracks rents. Where a page here needs zoning or rent context for a suburb, it links to those rather than restating them.
He is not a painter and not a licensed building practitioner. That is a limitation and it is stated deliberately: it is why the site argues from published sources you can check, and why anything that can only come from trade experience is labelled judgement and given as a range.
The sibling site, Renovate Auckland, does the same job for renovation work. If your repaint turns out to be the last step of something larger, that is where it belongs.
What the site will not do
- Invent a testimonial. There are none yet, so the review sections are empty.
- Use a stock photo of somebody else's house. Photography plates are marked as reserved with the shot they are commissioned for.
- Publish a price per square metre as though a source existed for it.
- Gate a guide or a calculator behind an email address.
- Claim a credential on behalf of a trade partner who has not been confirmed.
How it is built
Where the figures come from
Four kinds of statement appear on this site, and they are deliberately not blended into one voice.
- Published data — Stats NZ consents and price indexes, MBIE bond data, Auckland Council planning overlays, and 30 years of daily climate records. Every figure carries its source and date.
- Physics — coatings have published application limits. Those are not opinions, and in Auckland they decide the calendar more than the price list does.
- Judgement — where only experience can answer, the answer is a labelled range with the reasoning shown.
- Gaps — the things that do not exist. There is no free New Zealand cost-per-trade dataset, the Census records neither dwelling age nor cladding material, and Auckland Council publishes no open register of building consents. All of it is listed.
